Cook the potatoes in a large pot of well-salted boiling water until tender, about 13-15 minutes.
Drain the potatoes.
Return potatoes to the pot, stirring, over low heat for one minute. Side Note: This helps dry the excess moisture from the potatoes, which allows them to absorb the milk and butter.
Add the warmed milk, butter, garlic powder, sea salt, and freshly cracked pepper to taste.
Smash the potatoes with a hand masher until you reach your desired consistency.
